hey everybody!

Figured I should use this tumblr more often to get out my thoughts, feelings, and updates on all things…

Specifically today, I wanted to talk about the SimCity Let’s Play I started today, and outline my full plan for the future on it.

Both of these are from the same night and feature MichaelAlFox a good youtube friend of mine.

My plan for the series is to always play with someone else.

There SHOULD never be any episode of just me playing because that would be boring. (Subject to change).

I plan on playing mostly with Michael since I feel we have the best chemistry and he seems to know so much about the game!

and possibly NorthernLion if he decides to get the game.

The other people I would like to play with, is YOU!

Yes you, I am going to bring back “subscriber” days but instead of Animal Crossing, it will be SimCity!

I will create a large region where every now and then I invite you to build a city with me! I may have multiple guests at a time, I am not sure yet as I haven’t worked out the details.

The rules are pretty simple;

You must own the game, duh.

You must have a Skype

You must have a decent WORKING microphone.

And you must understand that soon after our recording session your city may be destroyed to make room for others (Subject to change)

I am very excited about the future of this project, and hope that you are too!

ZombiU - Why the Reviewers Hate it But I Love It!

The Wii-U was released yesterday, and I like may others was super excited to finally get the new Nintendo console. Some were drawn to it by the fact that it was the first ever HD console and others were drawn to it’s use of the Wii-U gamepad. I myself was just excited for a new console and wait to see what Nintendo was going to do with it. While I will admit I was disappointed with the continued lack of a DVD player, I was more than happy with the price and launch/launch window titles. Specifically I was intrigued with ZombiU the Ubisoft headed zombie survival game. I personally have had my fill of the tired zombie craze, but am always interested in seeing what people will try next. So I pre-ordered ZombiU and it was the first game I played; the game in itself is like a cross between Day Z, Resident Evil 4, and Dark/Demon Souls… Yes Dark Souls probably one of the best next gen games, but we’ll get into that later. I personally enjoyed the game a lot, sure I died in the first 40 minutes, but the game is designed around difficulty and you are expected to die (just like Dark Souls). When your character dies he becomes a zombie, and you become a new survivor being told what to do by a man in an undisclosed location with motives unknown to you, but you have to listen because your life is in his hands. This man continues the very popular use of voice over guides like that of gLados in the portal series or Atlas in Bioshock. The guide in ZombiU is much more like that of Atlas, which is very welcomed because in my opinion Atlas was one of the best parts of Bioshock. Having a guide who know more than you and has a “plan for you” is one of the scariest parts in any survival horror game. So this guide keeps sending more and more characters to do different tasks and every time you die you are expected to kill your previous self, who is now a zombie, and reclaim the loot you picked up as that character.

The game is first person and has a huge emphasis on the wii-U gamepads screen, and maybe too much sometimes… hacking, picking locks, looting, controlling machine guns and more, all from your handy gamepad. It is done with finesse with some very well designed menus that work in real time. Your main weapon in the game is a cricket bat, you are in London after all, and this weapon is where the critics destroyed this game. IGN and Gamespot specifically are who I will be focusing on. They both complained about the lack of ability in your survivor and how long it takes to kill the zombies with the bat. First of all when was the last time ANY of these reviewers killed a man? Not saying I have, but from what I hear it takes awhile to bash a skull in, also they complained about the inconsistency in how many swings it takes to kill the zombies, well yeah DUH, its not like every single swing is the exact same, it’s realistic and herein lies the big issue with people’s expectation of this game. Everyone is so used to playing zombie games like Dead Island, Dead Rising, and Left 4 Dead, where Zombies are weak and you are an almighty god with the power and ammunition to destroy the entire Zombie population alone. Not that these games are bad, they are great, but they aren’t survival or horror based, they aren’t scary they are just fun and silly and more arcade style than anything. The only possible game this can be compared to is Day Z, but to be honest, the only reason Day Z is so loved is because it is hilarious especially when playing with others. I personally think Day Z is overrated and the main reason for it’s popularity is the online features. Not to say Day Z is a bad game, but it controls horribly and looks pretty bad.

I am not trying to say ZombiU is the end all be all best Zombie game of all time, but it does a lot right, and for it to get scores like 4.5 (gamespot) and 6.3 (IGN) is ridiculous. These types of reviews not only hurt game sales but they hurt the future, why try to make something new when game reviewers shit all over it? When reviews like this take precedent over true individual opinions progression stops…

Soooo Happy Wars,

A hack and slash adventure game where you, your friends or complete strangers try to save a princess from the the dark knights (WHERE IS SHE?!?!). The games cutsey graphics remind me a lot of Costume Quest’s cell-shaded child’s imagination style which I love.

The characters all look very derpy but this just adds to the games overall charm. Combat is pretty easy, as most hack and slashes are, but the lack of a “lock-on” button really add a lot of difficulty in surviving.

Oh, and did I mention this is a free to play XBLA game… Yup Microsoft giving stuff away for free, the world must be ending. *pauses for laughter*

But in all seriousness this game is absolutely free… that is unless you want to get your ass kicked all the time you spend in it…

This game follows the Team Fortress 2 mechanic of playing a free game but being OFFERED STUFF, in the case of TF2 it’s hats, guns, etc. In the case of Happy Wars, ITS EVERYTHING; helmets, hair, faces, skin colors, weapons, shields, perks, etc etc. Now this isn’t the worst thing ever, they are still giving you a free game which still plays relatively well without making you spend tons of money on STUFF.

This games REAL problem comes in when it comes to the multiplayer. Whereas I refuse to pay for custom face paints and fancy weapons, some people have no problem throwing their/their parents’ money away on something shiny… and capable of doing twice the amount of damage my weapon does. This game has an obvious separation between those who BUY stuff and those who are conservative.

Now, to support the developers I will buy the occasional silly item, like a pig shield or a lightsaber knock-off, but some people go crazy with this stuff, as Farmville has proven. Plus unlike TF2 there is no way to trade stuff :( which is a bummer community-wise. The multiplayer mode is pretty fun though, and by fun I mean super hectic.

Your goal is to take your team (15 or so soldiers) and put them up against the other, each trying to destroy each other’s castle in a gruesome bloody battle. As I said some people are very over-powered because some kid memorized his mom’s credit card number, so it can be pretty frustrating. BUT JAKE! you may be saying, I WILL JUST PLAY THE SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN WITH MY BUDDIES! and I would reply that’s a Great idea! after all this entire game is based around teamwork, but here’s where the REAL UNFORTUNATE PART COMES IN!

YOU ONLY GET TO PLAY SINGLE PLAYER MODE AFTER PLAYING A BUNCH OF ONLINE MULTIPLAYER WITH PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT OVERPOWERED WEAPONS!!!!!!

to put it easier, you get to play this game one mission at a time, but as you complete missions they require you to reach a certain level in multiplayer, otherwise you can’t move on, meaning you must suffer through being demolished in multiplayer.

It’s a really fun game don’t get me wrong, but don’t get too excited at the free XBLA game, because you’ll at least have to pay for Xbox Live to play multiplayer to unlock more single-player campaign.

Say what you want about Happy Wars but it is a decently made online experience with the usual issues of online games, people being better than you. An issue that is nearly impossible to avoid.

Is this game worth it?

Fuck yes!
